A Pond Full of Dead Shrimp

Old Chen, a white shrimp farmer in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, lost over 150,000 yuan in a single cold snap last January. Nighttime air temperature dropped to 4°C, pond water fell below 12°C, and by the next morning his shrimp were floating belly-up. He'd done what most farmers do — deepened the water to 2 meters, ran aerators. It wasn't enough. Then he learned that neighboring farms that had draped aluminum foil woven fabric over pond canopy frames kept water temperatures 3–5°C higher. His shrimp could have survived.

His mistake wasn't laziness. It was fighting the wrong battle. Deep water and aeration slow the cooling, but they don't stop heat from escaping. You need to block the escape routes — and that's exactly what foil woven fabric does.

How Fish and Shrimp Actually Die in Winter

Most people assume cold kills fish directly. It usually doesn't. When water drops below 10°C, fish metabolism crashes. Digestion shuts down. The immune system goes offline. What kills them is secondary infection — water mold, ich, gill rot — all of which explode when fish are stressed and defenseless. Shrimp are even more vulnerable. White leg shrimp start stressing below 15°C and die off massively below 12°C. Golden pompano survival plummets below 14°C.

Another killer is temperature swings. Sun warms the water during the day, cold drains it at night. That反复 cycling is worse than steady cold — fish can't adapt fast enough.

Where the Heat Goes

Before you can stop heat loss, you need to know how it escapes. Three pathways matter:

Evaporation is the biggest. Water turning to vapor carries away enormous energy. On a dry, cold winter night, a standard one-mu shrimp pond loses heat through evaporation equivalent to over a dozen kilowatt-hours per hour. That visible mist hovering over ponds at dawn? That's your heat walking out the door.

Radiation comes second. Water surfaces and pond walls emit infrared energy outward. On clear winter nights with no cloud cover to reflect it back, radiation loss accelerates dramatically. This is why frost nights bite harder than cloudy nights at the same temperature.

Conduction and convection make up the rest. Pond walls conduct heat into surrounding soil. Wind sweeping across the water surface strips away warmth. Combined, these pathways can drop water temperature 2–4°C in a single night.

What Foil Woven Fabric Actually Does

The principle is straightforward. The aluminum foil surface reflects 95–97% of radiant heat with an emissivity of just 0.03–0.05. When installed over a pond on a canopy frame — typically 50–80cm above the water surface, foil side facing down — it does three things at once.

It bounces evaporative heat radiation back toward the water. It reflects outgoing infrared radiation back down instead of letting it escape into the night sky. And it creates a semi-enclosed air buffer that blocks cold wind from sweeping directly across the water surface, cutting convective heat loss.

Field tests show that ponds covered with foil woven fabric canopy systems maintain water temperatures 3–6°C higher than uncovered ponds during winter nights. During cold snaps, that gap is the difference between survival and total loss.

The material itself is waterproof, with tensile strength of 120N/25mm machine direction and 250N/25mm cross direction. It won't degrade in humid conditions or tear easily like plain plastic film. Outdoor service life runs 3–5 years under normal wind and sun exposure.

How to Install It for Maximum Effect

The standard approach: build a simple canopy frame from steel pipes or bamboo poles 50–80cm above the water. Drape the foil woven fabric over the frame with the reflective aluminum side facing downward toward the water. Overlap seams by at least 20cm and seal with aluminum tape. Don't seal everything airtight — leave small gaps for ventilation so condensed moisture doesn't drip back into the pond.

For larger operations, build roll-up structures. Unroll in the evening to trap heat, roll up during sunny days to let direct sunlight warm the water and provide ventilation. This "cover at night, uncover by day" approach keeps daily temperature fluctuation within 2°C — dramatically better than the 4–6°C swings in uncovered ponds.

Works for shrimp ponds, fish ponds, and nursery tanks. Especially effective for raised ponds and indoor recirculating systems where the cover area is manageable and the investment-to-benefit ratio is strongest.

VWIN Foil Woven Fabric for Aquaculture Cold Protection

VWIN supplies foil woven fabric with reflectivity above 96%, available in widths up to 6 meters to minimize seam overlaps. High tensile strength in both directions makes it suitable for large-span canopy frames over commercial ponds. We offer moisture-proof and breathable (micro-perforated) versions — for winter aquaculture cold protection, moisture-proof is typically recommended to maximize evaporation reduction; if ventilation is a priority, the breathable version works.

Every shipment comes with test reports covering tensile strength, reflectivity, and waterproof performance. If you're evaluating cold protection solutions for your aquaculture operation, or want to compare material options, reach out for samples and technical guidance.
