"This Material Feels Like Fabric, But the Surface Is Metallic — What Exactly Is It?"

A building insulation client turned our sample over and over last week, examining it from every angle. He'd been using pure aluminum foil for roof insulation, but every installation gave him headaches — the foil was too brittle, cracking at every fold, tearing at every nail. His crew had to handle it like delicate glassware.

I told him: this is MPET+nonwoven composite film. That metallic sheen comes from vacuum-deposited aluminum, but the substrate isn't foil — it's PET film. And that "fabric" underneath isn't ordinary cloth — it's nonwoven material.

He looked more confused: "So what's the advantage over pure aluminum foil?"

First, Understand What MPET Actually Is

MPET stands for Metallized PET. The manufacturing process deposits aluminum atoms onto BOPET (biaxially oriented polyester) film in a high-vacuum chamber, creating an extremely thin metallic layer.

How thin? Pure aluminum foil typically runs 6-9μm. The aluminum layer on MPET measures just 0.02-0.04μm — roughly 1/200th the thickness. But don't underestimate this thin layer. It reflects 94-97% of radiant heat, with an emissivity of only 0.03-0.05. Put simply: out of 100 units of radiant heat hitting the surface, 97 bounce back. Only 3 get through.

That's essentially the same reflective performance as pure aluminum foil. But MPET's substrate is PET film, not foil — and that changes everything about mechanical behavior.

The Nonwoven Layer: Adding "Skeleton" to "Metallic Skin"

MPET alone is impressive — lightweight, thin, highly reflective. But it has a weakness: it's too thin, too easily punctured or torn.

That's where the nonwoven layer comes in. Nonwoven fabric isn't woven or knitted. It's formed by bonding or heat-pressing fibers directly into a sheet. The interlocked fiber structure gives the material excellent tensile strength and tear resistance.

When MPET and nonwoven are laminated together, you get a material with dual characteristics: the MPET side provides high reflectivity and barrier properties; the nonwoven side provides mechanical strength and installation convenience.

What does this mean in practice? Workers can nail it directly without worrying about tears. The material bends, folds, and conforms to irregular surfaces without developing permanent creases that degrade reflectivity. Even if a sharp object scratches the surface, damage doesn't propagate the way it does in pure foil — the nonwoven's fiber structure stops cracks from spreading.

What Applications Suit This Structure?

MPET+nonwoven composite's core advantage is the combination of "reflective insulation + mechanical strength." This defines its primary application directions.

Building insulation is the largest application area. Roof, wall, and floor radiant barriers made from this material can be nailed directly to wooden rafters or steel structures, with installation efficiency far exceeding pure foil. It reflects solar radiation in summer and retains indoor heat in winter — bidirectional energy savings.

Industrial packaging is another major application. Large machinery and precision instruments need moisture-proof, rust-proof, and thermally insulated packaging for ocean shipping. The MPET side provides barrier and reflection; the nonwoven side provides puncture resistance and cushioning. More durable than pure foil, better barrier than ordinary plastic film.

Agricultural and outdoor applications are common too. Greenhouse thermal curtains and shade nets need long-term outdoor exposure. The nonwoven layer's weatherability and UV resistance make this composite more durable than pure foil over time.

Comparison Logic with Other Structures

If you only need barrier performance without mechanical strength, standard PET/AL/PE might be more economical. If you need extreme barrier performance (like vacuum insulation panels), pure foil or multi-layer MPET structures work better.

But if you need the combination of "reflective insulation + durability + easy installation," MPET+nonwoven is hard to replace. It's lighter than pure foil, tougher than pure foil, cheaper than pure foil, with much lower installation waste rates.

Cost advantage is significant too. MPET uses only 1/200th the aluminum of pure foil, dramatically reducing raw material costs. The nonwoven substrate costs far less than equivalent-thickness pure foil. Overall, unit area cost typically runs 30-50% lower than pure foil, with nearly identical reflective performance.

Key Parameters for Selection

When selecting MPET+nonwoven structures, several parameters matter.

MPET thickness affects reflectivity and barrier properties. Common specifications include 8μm, 10μm, and 12μm — thicker means better reflection but higher cost.

Nonwoven grammage affects mechanical strength. 30g/m² suits light-duty applications; 80-120g/m² works for high-strength building or industrial scenarios.

Lamination method matters too. Some products use adhesive lamination; others use thermal bonding. Thermal bonding provides stronger interlayer adhesion and better weatherability, at slightly higher cost.

VWIN's MPET+Nonwoven Solutions

VWIN offers multiple specifications of MPET+nonwoven composite films, covering nonwoven grammages from 30g/m² to 120g/m² and MPET thicknesses from 8μm to 12μm. We use thermal bonding lamination to ensure interlayer adhesion and long-term weatherability.

For building insulation, industrial packaging, agricultural covering, and other applications, we can recommend the most suitable specification combinations and provide samples for testing.
